1st In Class Essay , "landscape with the fall of Icarus"

According three sources from Ovid, Brueghel, and Williams which are the story of Daedalus and Icarus, the painting and poem of landscape with The Fall of Icarus, human beings are selfish and jealous in an older and lower class society by they using different effects to show Icarus’s death.

In the poem of “landscape with the fall of Icarus”, William Carlos Williams suggests that human selfish being had got into people who lived in a simple lower life. At the beginning, it talks about the season in the quote of “when Icarus fell. It was spring”. “Spring” is a warm and wonderful season, which symbols for new life. But at same time, Icarus is felling into the sea. Therefore, it makes the effect of Irony to preview Icarus’s ending. By the second part, there’s “a farmer was ploughing his field; the whole pageantry of the year was awake.” There is a framer working with his field, and he should see what happen. In fact, he doesn’t talk any actions to save Icarus, who he can see that dropped into water. The thing he only does that is farming. Here reflects the people think working becomes to more important that saving a life. This is the sight of people only act for themselves by nothing except. At the end, the quote of “a splash quite unnoticed” shows the dreary and desolate to surround Icarus’s drowning.

In the painting of “landscape with fall of Icarus”, this was created by Pieter Bruegel. The yellow part seems that is the sun rising or falling, then it described as a new life or a life has been end. Looking at the all picture, the background looks like the Era of 19^th century. On the top of left side, there’s a flourished city build between the ocean and huge mountains. It’s totally different and for away from the village on the front of painting. Then, there are some people’s feeding, farming and fishing in the small village. Meanwhile, it shows most of mountains are without lots of plats, just have few tree which are not really exuberant growth. There is a man who looks a middle-age, and many animals around him. It raises his head and looks up to the sky, when he’s feeding. In addition, the picture has another man stay at the edge sea and he’s fishing. Both of them should see what happened to Icarus, but they still continue their job and ignore Icarus. As the some thesis, the farmer and fish man are alive in the some class of society. Their minds are created that working is more important for them to save another life. They need to work for life, but they also posted as selfish because of life. That’s one of effects that Williams Carlos Williams suggested that life is complicate.

In the story of Daedalous and Icarus, which written by Ovid’s. Daesalous is exiled in a small island how to fly I a right way and got out there. But eventually Icarus fails to fly because he gets too high to melt his wing by sun and fell down into the sea until being dying. At the end of story, it shows why Daedalous would exile, because he killed his nephew. His sister sent a son to Daedalous as apprentice. The boy is very clever, and learns new thing very fast. There is a quote “and Daedalous in envy, hurley the boy” showing that Daedalous doesn’t want the boy can take over him. He killed the boy because of jealous. Meanwhile, he was exiled because of being killer, the Icarus died in escaping island. This seems a recycle of life by their actions. It’s irony that Daedalous should have the consequences to face his act.

Through those three sources, it makes the symbol of human selfish being to ironic the moral at old society. It reflects the life always goes into complicate, and there is not a absolute way to solve the action.
